fresh 2010 repress !! historia y violencia is a new project exploring the hispanic roots of santiago salazar (dj s2) and j. mendez (silent servant). both producers dissect their latin upbringings as a cinematic theme to create snapshots of the day-to-day blood and sweat that has shaped them as individuals. the sound takes cue from detroit, berlin and chicago to create classic, deep dancefloor tracks. santiago salazar started djing in the early 90s inspired by mix tapes his brother was bringing back from the gay underground scene in los angeles. his style has always been a mixture of house and techno. after moving to detroit, santiago began his music training with mike banks, label founder of underground resistance. he is also half of the duo ican (ican productions / planet e) who have been responsible for some killer techno releases. the central american born j. mendez cut his teeth as jasper in the late 90s/early 2000s, running the california-based cytrax label. a veteran dj from the age of 16, he has performed worldwide in clubs from berlin to osaka. along with technical wizards kit clayton and sutekh, he helped shed light on the small but influential minimal techno scene on the west coast. a chance meeting with karl oconnor in 1999 established a friendship that would later open the door to the sandwell district label in 2006. silent servants sound is a reinterpretation of early 80s post-punk electronics, paired with the deep, metallic sounds of basic channel and downwards.

shit hot release from the super consistent sex tags crew !! footnotes was the bergen, norway based label run by bjørn torske with only two releases, the late 1997 house classic and collectors item “haribo” by erot and the way too underrated dub-house 12” “farlig fiffus” by krisp. in 2002 the laqcuers for the third release were cut and all ready for the press, but for some obscure reason it never made it to the actual pressing. in the end lacquers were demolished and the mastertape got lost. several years later the mastertape showed up in a tower of old tapes and mastercuts. recovered by the sex tags mania crew, now seven years after it’s origibnal releasedate, doc l junior’s two classic and brilliant house and disco tracks are ready for a proper release. as a tribute, a longing for old days, sex tags mania will releases footnotes 3 in april 2009..

this obscure lost soundtrack for an even more obscure (and also lost and never finished) italia violenta cop movie was recently discovered when i bought the dusty reel tapes from a restaurant owner in fiumicino, a seaside town near rome. panter 777 aka il labirinto di roma violenta aka the maze of violence, he told me, was directed by gervasio giardano in 1981 and was considered too (politically) explicit by the movie production company who dropped the project after the first screening. the soundtrack, an explosion of wahwah funk riffs and juicy analog synthesizers, was composed by an obscure band called nacho patrol. the restaurant owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, was one of the band members and composed most of the tracks. dj whiteside and vocalist candy williams team up again for the new release on milk & sugar recordings. whiteside, since 20 years now on the road, started in the music business in switzerland as a producer of illegal, but highly demanded mixtapes, the >billboard tapes<. fined for music piracy in 1990 it took him as long as until 1995, before he gained great success again with >ugly house<, the most successful cd compilation series in switzerland until now. he was given the opportuninty to release his first artist album soon after, which was also a great seller, not only in switzerland.

the radical discovery by amir abdullah of 5 two-track master tapes in the care of hermine brooks Ð widow of innovative detroit drummer roy brooks Ð of the charles mingus quintet recorded live in detroit at strata concert gallery is cause for some serious celebration. these electrifying recordings took place during mingusÕ week-long residency in february 1973. they were broadcast live by drummer/producer and broadcaster robert ÒbudÓ spangler for wdet fm Ð a public radio station dedicated to jazz Ð from kenny and barbara coxÕs multi-purpose home for strata records at 46 selden. entrance to the gig was $5 dollars in advance and $6 on the door.

kabar is a compilation from electronic from reunion island (right in the middle of the indian ocean). tropical sounds, sunny moods and crŽole dialect from mostly unknown artists from the island. worth mentionning jako maron ( nyege nyege tapes), alex barck (of jazzanova) or labelle though and some artists with a profile in world music (christine salem, maya kamaty). perfect summer opening compilation for both rare groove diggers and demanded djs in search of the best tropical beats. a musical electronic snapshot from an exotic and unknown part of the globe. half of the tracks on the compilation have never been officially released.

in the mid 90s, while playing in bands, max wŸrden started to record ideas on 4-track tapes. amongst other instruments the guitar was his favourite. since then the guitar is a steady constant during his sound production. predominantly he utilizes the intrument in experimental ways: he sticks screws and metal pieces between the strings or let s marbles run down the guitar neck, triggering a feedback, which becomes the foundation of a track. on his album momentum he went beyond the guitar, but he placed the intrument into focus of the production. max creates energyladen and experimental ambient music that always aims for what genre listeners looking for: the ultimate relaxation moment. the tracks are carried by slowly building string-generated sounds. live recordings and complex arrangements find a delicate symbiosis of ambient and strings.

hot off the heels of the beautiful obsolete machines lp released this month, radiuss cassette demo restoration project returns to form with the interpolation tapes series. the original source tapes had aged, warped and degraded and as a result we ve preserved the best segments, sampled and reprocessed with a vintage prophet 2000 sampler, studio 440 and various linn samplers to add depth and range to the original source material. we ve spent nearly an entire year restoring and interpolating over 100 hours of music, processing sound and redesigning the blueprints of this long forgotten project. every track was originally recorded down to an old tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life. it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and re-arranging these masters, regardless of the time passed, there s so much depth in sound design, raw emotions and when considering the limitations of hardware in the era these were recorded, they ve truly aged like a fine wine. we hope you enjoy this magical time in music, as we are very inspired by all that was happening in those years, theres undeniably something in the air, a mystifying energy, long may it live on.

there is a long-standing love affair between dj harvey and pikes, ibiza. as well as coming back for his third consecutive Ômercury risingÕ residency, the legendary ÔdjsÕ dj has been appointed Ôcultural attachŽÕ for pikes, meaning his magic touch and feel-good presence will create even more special moments at pikes this summer, including the launch of new label, pikes records.
in 2015 dj harvey made his hugely anticipated return to ibiza and made pikes his home for his mercury rising debut, a concept inspired by the beauty of the real ibiza, the incredible history of pikes and a genuine love for music. the love, the dancing, the music and the balearic spirit perfectly and poetically encapsulated by dj harvey has seen mercury rising widely recognised as the most special night to embrace the island in over a decade.

a.r.c. soundtracks is the audio/visual project of k.craig and david armes. dereliction//mirror is the duoÕs third release, following on from a debut album, archive: volume one (little crackd rabbit) and a cassette release for sacred tapes, from a shattered beam. dereliction//mirror was created on-residency at salford s islington mill, home to gnod, sacred tapes and many other noise/experimental musicians and labels. it is an audio/visual piece that uses the semi-derelict attic spaces as both inspiration and source material. focussing on the notion of ruins and their potential for reappropriation, dereliction//mirror combines a dense, multi-layered sound-world with ritualistic visuals to create an immersive, hypnotic work. this new film and soundtrack takes us into a bleak auditory realm of post-industrial structures and traces the role of the body within these liminal spaces. strained harmonics and industrial, discordance mesh with veiled rhythms and spoken-word narrative to create a heavy, static energy to both sound and visuals.

a collaboration between aphex twin (richard d. james) and µÐziq (mike paradinas), mike & rich - Õexpert knob twiddlersÕ was made back in 1994. richard edited the tracks into shape later in 1996 with his new apple mac computer and it was released later that year on rephlex, the label he co-owned and which released the first two albums by µ-ziq. this new reissued version has been carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original dat tapes, put into a more fitting order and, more excitingly, seven new bonus tracks and alternative versions have also been added. the album was recorded over a few days during the 1994 world cup, back when richard lived in a big shared flat in stoke newington. richard had tried to collaborate with a few other likeminded artists but something clicked when mike and rich worked together and the sessions have a unique feel, playful and at times actually drunk. these are fun experiments in the spirit of lighthearted moog pop and ripe 70s british tv themes, standing out from the po-faced electronica of the time with a garish glee. the record was made on what is now seen as pretty primitive gear - an atari, roland mks-80, memorymoog, roland r8 and a handful of samples on a casio fz-10m - but itÕs to their credit that it resonates well with the hardware workouts coming out today. there s a broadminded but sloppy funk to the record, even whistling, singing and harpsichord in reg and wonky beat pile-ons in jelly fish . there s latin piano and wheezy drunken techno in ÔvodkaÕ, or the sleepy spaced out ambience of Ôbu bu bu ba with its barely contained laughter which seems to reflect the absurdity. the new versions and bonus tracks are an absolute delight - from a trancier version of Ôvodka to the wonky bounce of Ôportamento gosh , the 3/4 dub of waltz, the banging door bass of brivert and muonds , the creepy seasick atmosphere of clissold bathroom and finishing with the strangely graceful and serious organ plodder . a generous and welcome return to the racks
